Into the Woods

Book by  James Lapine
Music by  Stephen Sondheim
Lyrics by  Stephen Sondheim
Based on Classic Fairy Tales

Two Acts, Book Musical, Rated PG
Revised 2006 Version

SYNOPSIS

This Tony Award-winning musical is a hilarious retelling of Grimm Brothers stories. These fractured fairy tales of a darker hue provide the remarkable context for Into the Woods, which deconstructs the Brothers Grimm by way of Rod Serling. While the faces and names are familiar, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, and company inhabit a sylvan neighborhood in which witches and bakers are next-door neighbors, handsome princes from once-parallel fables are competitive (and equally vain) brothers, and all the stories intersect through unexpected new plot twists. Into the Woods is appealing to people of all ages and interests with its witty catchy music, and dramatic fairy tale narrative.

The original production ran for 764 performances on Broadway and had a 17-month national tour. The original cast featured Bernadette Peters (the Witch) and Joanna Gleason (the Baker's Wife). Other Witches included Phyllicia Rashad, Nancy Dussault, Betty Buckley, Ellen Foley and Cleo Laine. Dick Cavett played the Narrator for several weeks on Broadway in 1988. There was also a much-heralded London production, which is also available as an RCA cast album. The original Broadway cast was videotaped for PBS' Great Performances" series; that show was made available on laserdisc and now on videotape.

This same team won the Pulitzer Prize for Sunday in the Park With George three years before."
